The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse defines constipation as having a bowel movement fewer than three times per week. In healthy adults, constipation may be caused by insufficient fiber in the diet or lack of exercise. Medication reactions and abuse of stimulant laxatives can also cause constipation as the bowel becomes dependent upon the laxatives to function. Psyllium seeds provide a natural remedy for constipation without the risk of dependence from stimulant laxatives, according to Linda B. White, M.D., author of “The Herbal Drugstore.” Psyllium seeds are available in commercial laxative preparations from the drugstore and also from health food stores as plain ground psyllium seeds.
Step 1
Measure 1 tbsp. of ground psyllium seeds or commercial fiber supplement into a drinking glass.
Step 2
Pour 8 oz. of juice over the psyllium seeds. Stir the mixture until psyllium powder dissolves.
Step 3
Drink the juice mixture immediately. If it sits too long the seeds will expand and the mixture will be undrinkable.
Step 4
Drink 8 oz. of plain water immediately after drinking the psyllium mixture.
Step 5
Wait up to 24 hours. If you do not have a bowel movement, consume another batch of psyllium powder. Repeat as necessary for the next seven days.
Tips and Warnings
- If your constipation continues after a week of treatment, consult a physician. Prolonged constipation may cause fecal impaction, where stool becomes stuck in the rectum.
