The inverted breast stroke is a swimming stroke that is performed while you are on your back. This stroke is generally faster than the standard backstroke, but slower than the back crawl. Swimming the inverted breast stroke can improve your coordination, and because it utilizes different muscle groups, it's effective for swimming laps. It can take some practice to master the movement of the inverted breast stroke.
Step 1
Hold onto the side of the pool with your feet on the wall like a typical tuck position. Push off the wall with your feet.
Step 2
Lift your arms back over your head to break the water, and keep your head submerged in the water. Touch your palms together above your head, while at the same time bringing your legs together in a quick, circular clap.
Step 3
Glide for three seconds with your legs straight. Point your toes and keep your legs together during the glide.
Step 4
Move your arms out away from your body and down to your sides with your elbows straight.
Step 5
Slide your hands up your sides to your armpits, then up and over your head. Bring your knees together with feet apart and toes pointing at each other as your hands rise. Move your feet together and straighten your legs as your arms raise overhead for the glide.
