Whey is a protein in cow's milk. It is the liquid that is left when you make cheese, when the solid curds separate from the whey. This liquid is high in protein and loaded with vitamins and minerals. Instead of throwing it away, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to six months. Whey has a variety of uses, including adding it to your recipes to increase the nutritional value.
Step 1
Add whey to soups, homemade stocks and homemade bread in place of water. Substitute it in equal parts instead of water in these recipes for added protein and nutrients.
Step 2
Feed the whey to your animals, including dogs, cats and even chickens. The extra nutrition will supplement their diet. Consult your vet first if you have animals on a protein-restricted diet.
Step 3
Add 2 tbsp. of whey to soaking water for dried beans. Soak the beans overnight.
Step 4
Marinade steak or chicken in whey with any spices you like. The whey will help bring out the natural flavors in the meat.
Step 5
Make lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables using 4 tbsp. of whey. Cut vegetables such as cucumbers or squash into slices and pack tightly into a jar. Add the whey with 1 tbsp. of sea salt and fill the jar with filtered water. Close the jar tightly with a lid and leave in a warm place for two to three days. Enjoy your lacto-fermented food as a condiment similar to pickles.
Step 6
Add whey to fruit smoothies for added protein. You can even drink the whey plain as it is, but the flavor may not be appealing to many people. Adding it to a smoothie will make it more pleasing to taste.
