The blood type diet promotes an eating plan based on certain natural reactions with food and your specific blood type. Dr. Peter D'Adamo, creator of the blood type diet, believes that food proteins, called lectins, are processed differently, depending on specific blood types. Blood types A, B, AB and O all process various foods differently. Specific foods are recommended on this diet plan for people with type O blood.

Type O Diet

Type O blood types are typically strong and energetic. When stressed, type Os can demonstrate a hyper and angry response. Blood type O is the most common type of blood found in humans; the wrong type of foods can cause this blood type to experience insulin reduction, fatigue and weight gain.

Meat, Poultry and Seafood

Type O blood types function best when including large amounts of protein from animal sources. High quality beef, veal, protein and chicken benefit type Os, particularly when it comes to managing the physical response to stress. Fats and protein in meats are easily digested by type Os highly acidic digestive system. Cold-water fish, including salmon, cod and tuna are also beneficial as they contain iodine and regulate the thyroid.

Whole Wheat and Grains

Foods that encourage weight gain in type O blood types often contain gluten and whole wheat. The website Run the Planet advises people with this blood type to avoid these foods as well as corn, flour and oat products. Rice and barley products can be substituted for whole wheat products.

Nuts and Legumes

With the exception of cashews, peanuts and pistachios, type Os can benefit from the nutrition found in nuts and seeds, including pumpkin seeds, pecans and walnuts. Beans are not a very effective food choice for type Os, and may cause the body to create more stomach acid, according to Run the Planet. While lentils, kidney beans and navy beans should be avoided, other legumes such as black-eyed peas, azuki beans and pinto beans are fine for type O diets.

Fruits and Vegetables

Type Os benefit from a diet rich in fresh fruit. Figs, plums and prunes are important as they help balance the high acidity of type O digestive tract, and may help reduce stomach irritation. Some fruit, such as tangerines, grapefruit and oranges are highly acidic and may cause stomach irritation, says Run the Planet. Type Os tend to have unstable thyroids, and may gain weight as a result. Cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower should be avoided as they interfere with normal thyroid function. Eggplant and potatoes may cause arthritic-like conditions in some type O diets. Other vegetables like garlic, onions, peppers, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin are excellent choices for type O diets.
