How to Steam Asparagus on the Stove

How to Steam Asparagus on the Stove

Hailing from the lily family, asparagus is a nutritionally beneficial vegetable with a tantalizing taste. Asparagus can be enjoyed in everything from salads to casseroles or all by itself. Steaming asparagus on the stove is one the healthiest ways to prepare it while keeping its flavor intact.

Step 1

Wash the asparagus under cool running water to remove debris and any chemicals that might have been used while it was growing or in transportation.

Step 2

Break off the hard stems at the bottom with your hands and discard them.

Step 3

Cover the bottom of a saucepan with 1 to 2 inches of water and bring it to a boil on the stove.

Step 4

Place a steam basket or rack in the pot and place the asparagus in it once the water starts to boil.

Step 5

Cover the pot with a lid and allow the asparagus to steam until tender for five minutes.
