When it comes to exercise, you're never too young to start. Teenagers who participate in physical activity actually find it easier to live active lifestyles later on. Daily exercise provides physical benefits essential for growing teenagers and lowers the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. But what some might say is even more important are the psychological benefits exercise provides, including mental stability for teenagers as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Physiological Benefits

Teenagers who exercise daily will experience a number of physical benefits. They'll become stronger, they'll get faster, and their cardiovascular endurance will last longer, improving their quality of life by making common daily activities like climbing the stairs easier. In addition, according to "NASM Essentials of Personal Fitness Training," exercise promotes proper cellular and metabolic functioning, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cancer.

Better Sleep

A recent study published in the "Journal of Adolescent Health" reports that teenagers who participated in a high level of physical activity enjoyed better sleep at night and better psychological functioning. Quality sleep gave teenagers better rest at night, so that they were less lethargic, and it gave them better concentration throughout the day. The study also cites lower rates of depression and anxiety among those who were more active and had better sleep.

Reduces Risk of Depression and Increases Self-Esteem

Physical and mental health benefits gained from daily exercise include a reduced risk of depression and increased self-esteem. Self-esteem issues are common among teenagers, but when it gets severe it can lead to depression and even suicide. Exercise combats feelings of depression by releasing endorphins, which are chemicals that contribute to a feeling of well-being. In addition, the Mayo Clinic states that self-esteem improves when people reach their exercise goals no matter how small, because exercise makes them more confident in their appearance.

Improving Social Skills

Daily exercise gives teenagers a unique opportunity to socialize with others. When teenagers exercise, or participate in sports, especially school leagues, it gives them a chance to meet others with the same interest. Making new friends and even mentors, such as a coach or trainer, teaches teenagers important social skills and gives them a positive outlook on exercise, making it more likely they will lead active lifestyles later on in life.
