Protein is one of six essential nutrients that your body needs on a daily basis. It helps your body build and repair itself. In order to digest proteins, your body must break them down into amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Your body produces enzymes for this process called proteases. Papaya contains a naturally occurring protease enzyme called papain, which is available as a dietary supplement. Consult your doctor before taking papain.

Digestion

Most people are not as familiar with the pancreas and its functions as they are with other organs and glands. Your pancreas is an important part of your digestive system. It is a gland in your stomach area that secretes digestive enzymes, among other things. Your pancreas secretes a wide variety of enzymes, each targeted at extracting nutrients from different foods. Amylolytic enzymes break down carbohydrates, for instance. Enzymes that break down protein are collectively known as proteolytic enzymes.

Uses

Under normal circumstances, a healthy pancreas produces enough proteolytic enzymes to meet your needs. However, historically people have used proteolytic enzymes such as papain, for medical purposes. Papain is commonly used in combination with other digestive enzymes such as bromelain, which is found in pineapples. Other enzymes typically include trypsin and chymotrypsin. Proteolytic enzymes are used for more than digestive support. Other uses include immune and joint support.

Papaya

Papaya is a tropical plant native to Mexico and Central America. It is commonly eaten for digestive support due to the presence of digestive enzymes. Papaya supplements are also available as are extracts of papain. Supplements are available in a variety of forms, so doses vary. Take papaya supplements for digestion as the label or your health care provider directs.

Wobenzym N

Because every cell in your body requires protein, proper digestion can provide a wide variety of health effects. Wobenzym N is a common supplement that uses the proteolytic enzyme papain found in papaya. It is marketed for digestive support and to reduce inflammation. Because other enzymes are included, it is difficult to know whether papain causes these effects on its own, especially since dietary supplements are not required to undergo rigorous testing.

Side Effects

Never take papaya supplements or proteolytic enzymes containing papain if you are allergic to papaya. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a serious allergic reaction. The side effects of papain and other proteolytic enzymes include nausea, gas and bloating. Papain is not known to cause any serious side effects or interact with any medications.
