Ice packs are useful for treating bruises, bumps, pain and swelling. These types of ailments often occur unexpectedly. Keeping an ice pack in the freezer for such an occasion ensures you're ready. In the event that an ice pack is not available or when you want a more affordable option, make your own ice pack. A bit of creativity, and thinking outside the box can turn an ordinary home object into a medical emergency tool.
Step 1
Determine the storage capacity of the freezer bag. Divide the capacity by four, then mix 3 parts water to 1 part alcohol in the bag. The alcohol will prevent the ice pack from freezing solid, making the pack more flexible.
Step 2
Pour the water and alcohol into the freezer bag. Add a dash of food coloring to the contents. This will make the ice pack easily identifiable in the future.
Step 3
Push excess air out of the bag as you begin to seal it. Slip the ice pack into a second bag to prevent leaking.
Step 4
Place the pack in the freezer for 10 to 12 hours until it freezes into slush. In a pinch, the ice pack will be ready for use within four hours, but you should put it back in the freezer after 20 minutes of treatment.
Tips and Warnings
- If you need an ice pack immediately, use a bag of frozen vegetables that are in the freezer already. You can also freeze a bag of rice to use as an ice pack.
