You can find the ideal body weight for your height by calculating your body mass index (BMI). Your BMI is a ratio between your height and weight that the World Health Organization (WHO) commonly uses in population studies. It's convenient to use in large groups because it can be calculated quickly and is independent of age and gender. Health care workers also use BMI to identify individuals who may not be at a healthy body weight.
Step 1
Measure your height with a tape measure to obtain your height in inches. Your BMI is equal to 703 x w / (h x h) where w is your weight in pounds and h is your height in inches.
Step 2
Solve the BMI formula for weight. BMI = 703 x w / (h x h), so w = BMI x (h x h) / 703. This equation will allow you to identify your ideal weight range from your height.
Step 3
Calculate the minimum weight of your ideal weight range. The minimum recommended BMI for adults is 18.5, so w = 18.5 (h x h) / 703 = 0.0263 (h x h). Your minimum recommended weight is therefore 0.0263 x (h x h), where h is your height in inches.
Step 4
Derive the maximum weight of your ideal weight range. The maximum recommended BMI for adults is 25, so w = 25 (h x h) / 703 = 0.0356 (h x h). Your maximum recommended weight is therefore 0.0356 x (h x h), where h is your height in inches.
Step 5
Identify the range for your ideal weight. The range for your ideal weight is therefore between 0.0263 x (h x h) and 0.0356 x (h x h), where h is your height in inches.
