It will take time to get used to wearing your new dentures, and eating is a challenge while your mouth adjusts to your new teeth. Poor-fitting dentures can make eating difficult, so visit your dentist if your dentures feel loose or too tight or if you experience pain when chewing. Learning how to eat with your dentures will feel strange or awkward at first, but with practice, this task will become easier.
Step 1
Eat soft foods and chew slowly. Examples of foods to begin eating include soups, yogurt, fish, cheese, cooked vegetables and scrambled eggs. When you are first learning to eat with your dentures, avoid sticky foods such as caramel, meats, hard foods such as raw vegetables and foods with bones or shells.
Step 2
Bite with your pointed canine teeth and the teeth behind them instead of your front teeth. Avoid pulling or tearing your food when taking a bite.
Step 3
Chew the food on both sides of your mouth so the dentures remain level and one side doesn't tip.
Tips and Warnings
- You can apply denture adhesive to your dentures before putting them in your mouth if you are worried that your dentures may fall out while you are eating. Denture adhesive is used as a short-term method to help keep the dentures in place while you get used to wearing them. Add other foods to your diet as you become more confident with eating. If you have trouble eating certain foods, try to find alternatives. For example, if you have trouble eating apples, try eating applesauce.
- You may have difficulty feeling hot foods or noticing small bones in your mouth while eating.
