Yasmin (drospirenone & ethinyl estradiol) is a medication used to prevent pregnancy. According to the manufacturer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, drospirenone may increase potassium, so you should not take this drug if you have kidney, liver or adrenal disease because it could cause serious heart and health problems. Oral contraceptives are highly efficient at preventing pregnancy but will not protect against sexually transmitted infections or HIV. There are some possible side effects of Yasmin that you should be aware of.

Headache

Headache is a common side effect while on Yasmin. This side effect may diminish after your body has a chance to get used to the hormones in Yasmin. You can use acetampinophen (Tylenol) to alleviate your headache. If your headache is severe and is accompanied by dizziness or visual changes, it may be a sign of something more serious. Contact your health care provider.

Menstrual Irregularity

Bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods is a common side effect of Yasmin, reports Drug Information. Once your body gets used to this medication, your period may become more regular. Some women can experience irregularity the entire time that they take Yasmin. Speak with your gynecologist regarding your options if this side effect becomes intolerable.

Breast Pain and Tenderness

Breast changes including tenderness, enlargement and secretion may occur while using Yasmin. Continue to do monthly self-exams of your breasts and report any changes in breast tissue to your physician.

Severe Side Effects

According to the manufacturer, oral contraceptives can be associated with an increased risk of several serious cardiovascular side effects, including blood clots, stroke and heart attack. If you are taking Yasmin and experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain or lump in your calf area, or confusion and numbness, seek immediate medical attention. If you are over 35 years of age and are a smoker, you are at a higher risk for cardiovascular side effects.
