3 Ways to Identify Symptoms of a Vaginal Infection

1. Characteristics of Vaginal Discharge

Some amount of vaginal discharge is normal in most women of childbearing age. However, atypical discharge could be a symptom of a vaginal infection. Normal vaginal discharge is clear, white or slightly yellowish in color. Vaginal discharge that indicates a potential vaginal infection can be greenish or grayish in color, have an unpleasant odor and/or have an abnormal consistency.

Different types of vaginal infections have different corresponding vaginal discharge symptoms. For example, yeast infections typically present with a thick, cottage-cheese-like vaginal discharge. On the other hand, bacterial vaginosis causes a thinner type of vaginal discharge, but it may have a very foul smell. Trichomoniasis vaginal discharge may have a yellow-green color and appear frothy. If you experience abnormal vaginal discharge and can't identify the cause it's best visit your doctor for an examination.

2. Painful Urination and Sexual Intercourse

Pain is a common symptom of vaginal infection, but the pain is typically not passive. Most pain associated with vaginal infections occurs during urination or sexual intercourse. Painful urination is often experienced as a burning sensation and can be mistaken for a urinary tract infection. Pain during sexual intercourse can indicate other more serious gynecological conditions and should be checked out by a physician. Occasionally, passive or intermittent abdominal pains can be present with certain types of vaginal infections or infections that have been left untreated. You should visit your doctor to identify the source of these abdominal pains.

3. Itchiness Down Below

Itchiness is one of the most common symptoms of a vaginal infection. Typically, the itchiness is around the outside of the vagina and is often caused by the vaginal discharge produced by the infection. Redness and swelling of this area is common and can be exacerbated by scratching. Some vaginal infections can cause itchy lumps or blisters around the genital area as well.
