Meat, low-carb veggies and dairy products are allowed on the keto diet, and so are beverages such as tea and coffee. But in order to fit with the diet, keto coffee creamer has to be very low in (if not free of) sugar — and many popular creamers on the market are not.

Reading your ingredient labels is key when selecting a keto coffee creamer, as many products can include filler ingredients and additives that aren't exactly nutritious. For that reason, this creamer comes highly recommended by Justine Chan, RD, CDE, as it has fewer than 10 ingredients and is relatively low in carbs.

"I recommend this creamer because the ingredient list is simple: It has less than one gram of carbs per tablespoon, and it has less than half the amount of saturated fat compared to heavy whipping cream," Chan says. Not to mention, the delightful combination of creamy oat milk and coconut milk give this keto creamer a smooth texture very similar to that of traditional dairy creamers.

Milk and other dairy products add protein to your diet, but if you can't tolerate dairy, this is a great alternative with several nutritional benefits. "The collagen allows you to add protein to your morning coffee without worrying about lactose, and it is sweetened with monk fruit, a natural calorie-free sweetener," says Tara Bassi, CNS, LDN.

MCT oil is commonly used in keto coffee creamers for good reason. "MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides, which are fatty acids that are easily digested and used for energy," says Mollie Ferguson, RD, LDN. "MCT may also be beneficial for brain and gut health."

The rest of the ingredients in this keto creamer check out, too. "It contains simple ingredients like coconut oil powder, vanilla and stevia, and it doesn't have added preservatives, thickeners and artificial sweeteners," Ferguson says. Even better is that this option is shelf stable and budget-friendly compared to other keto creamers on the market."

"While a whole glass of this nut-based plant milk will provide eight grams of carbs, using a tablespoon as coffee creamer will provide less than one gram," Hernandez says. "I also love the simplicity of the ingredients: There are no artificial additives, and the cashews provide heart-healthy unsaturated fats."

8. Best Creamy Texture: Left Coast Keto Coffee Creamer

You'll need a blender to use this keto coffee creamer, or it won't mix well into your morning joe.

If it's a creamy brew you're after, Dr. Daniela Novotny, RD, a registered dietitian at Missouri State University, suggests looking into this coffee creamer, as it's made with ingredients that ultimately make your coffee into a smooth, frothy delight.

"This coffee creamer contains coconut oil, MCT oil, ghee and a few other additives to provide a creamy mouthfeel," Dr. Novotny says. "It's best to blend this keto coffee creamer with brewed coffee, as it does not have an emulsifying agent."

And while it tastes great and gives you the texture you want, this option is a bit higher in fat than others on our list, so it's not one you should choose if you're looking for a "healthier" alternative to dairy-based creamers. "This product is still high in calories and fat, so it's best to stick with just 1 tablespoon a day," Dr. Novotny says.

How to Choose the Best Keto Coffee Creamer

When you're shopping for the best keto coffee creamer, there are several things to consider before adding a product to your grocery cart.

1. Artificial Sweeteners and Flavors

When selecting the best keto coffee creamer, dietitians like Lorencz advise choosing a product that has minimal artificial sweeteners and flavorings. Many keto products will have artificial sweeteners in them to compensate for the lack of sugar, but these aren't necessarily good for your health.

"Besides plain sugar, some ingredients to avoid in keto coffee creamers include sucrose, agave and high-fructose corn syrup," Lorencz says.

2. Preservatives And Thickeners

Where possible, Ferguson suggests avoiding keto creamers that have preservatives and thickening ingredients. "Always opt for creamers that don't have preservatives in them like dipotassium phosphate and thickeners such as carrageenan," she says. "All these unnecessary additives may upset your stomach by disrupting your gut microbiome."

Is Keto Coffee Creamer Healthy?

Unlike traditional creamers — which often have high amounts of sugar and carbs — many keto creamers are low in carbs and get their creaminess from coconut cream, almond milk, MCT oil and other non-dairy sources,” Lorencz says.

"Creamers derived from coconuts and other nuts can be helpful if you're trying to eat more healthy fats," Hernandez says. Taking in more of these fats is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, according to Harvard Health Publishing.

That said, some keto coffee creamers are still high in calories and saturated fats, which may be harmful to your health if you're adding a lot to your cup, Lorencz says. As a reminder, limiting saturated fat to five or six percent of your daily calories (about 120 calories if you eat a 2,000-calorie diet) can help lower your risk of heart disease, per the American Heart Association.

And don't think they're a weight loss solution, either: "While a keto diet may help you shift your weight, there isn’t much evidence of faster fat loss than a normal, balanced calorie-deficit diet," says Emma Drackford, RD. "Keto creamers can make the diet more enjoyable, but that's about it."
