Anxiety is a problem that most experience at some point during their lives. This is a natural response to a situation where we are unacquainted, causing us to feel tense. Depending on the degree of severity, your doctor may recommend medication or other forms of therapy. However, there are some vitamins that can help calm your nerves.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps maintain proper adrenal functioning and regulates your brain chemistry. Large doses have a tranquilizing effect, which can help allay anxiety. It also has bioflavonoids that aid in stress reduction. Grapefruits, bananas, blueberries, orange juice, broccoli, tomatoes and liver are some food sources rich in Vitamin C.

B-Vitamins

There are a variety of B vitamins that are helpful at relieving stressed nerves. Vitamin B3, or niacin, encourages serotonin production which regulates mood and sleep patterns. Vitamins B5 and B9, or pantothenic acid and folic acid, help produce and balance neurotransmitters in the brain. Vitamin B6, or pyroxidine, aids in anxiety reduction. If you are deficient in Vitamin B-12, you will be likely to experience heightened stress and anxiety. A daily B vitamin complex supplement should provide you with all of the essential B vitamins your body needs.

Calcium & Magnesium

Calcium and magnesium supplements offer an array of advantages to calm nerves. Calcium is a tranquilizer and magnesium that relieves tension and nervous feelings. A deficiency in magnesium may lead to irritability and tension. These supplements can be taken daily; if you take them at night, they may help promote restful sleep.

Other Supplements

There are plenty of alternative supplements that aid in anxiety reduction. Fish oil is one of the best because it contains omega-3 fatty acids that can enhance brain functioning. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a deficiency in them may result in mood swings or depression.

Furthermore, the Anxiety Disorders Association Of America states that Kava is safe for treating anxiety and improving mood. Also, zinc and vitamin A can help to calm nerves and reduce stress.
