Doxycycline is a medication in a class of drugs known as tetracycline antibiotics. Tetracycline antibiotics work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the body. Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis and skin blemishes caused by rosacea, says Drugs.com. Women who take oral contraceptives should consult a physician prior to taking doxycycline, as it reduces effectiveness and may increase the risk of pregnancy. There are side effects associated with doxycycline use.
Sensitivity to the Sun
Patients who take doxycycline may be more sensitive to the sun. They should refrain from being in the direct sunlight while outside and should avoid the use of tanning beds and sunlamps. The use of protective clothing and sunblock is important to help prevent sunburn.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Doxycycline may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Symptoms can include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach upset, says Drugs.com. Taking doxycycline with food may help to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort. Eating smaller meals more frequently and avoiding spicy or fatty foods may help diminish upset stomach. Severe vomiting and diarrhea should be reported to a physician. It may lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous. Diarrhea that contains blood may be a sign of a secondary infection and should be reported to a physician prior to taking another dose of doxycycline.
Vaginal Itching and Discharge
Women taking doxycycline may experience vaginal itching and discharge. While antibiotics work to kill bacteria in the body, they also kill some of the body's good bacteria, making an environment prone to yeast overgrowth. Taking a probiotic supplement or eating foods that are high in natural probiotics such as yogurt may decrease the risk of developing a vaginal infection. Symptoms of a vaginal infection can include vaginal itching, burning, redness, discharge and pain with intercourse. Patients taking doxycycline who experience vaginal discomfort should consult their gynecologist. A vaginal examination and culture may be performed to determine the cause of discomfort and proper treatment.
