The bladder plays an important role in expelling waste from the body. Bladder disorders, including urinary tract infections, bladder cancer, incontinence and urethra infections, affect both men and women. The most common condition, a urinary tract infection, is often concentrated in the bladder. Bladder health can be affected by sexual intercourse, pregnancy, a structural obstruction restricting the flow of urine, or chronic disorders such as diabetes. Consult a medical physician before beginning to take any new supplements.

Cranberry

Cranberry juice, supplements and teas are natural remedies that can help treat bladder inflections. Pure cranberry helps acidify urine, which inhibits bacterial growth and prevents bacteria from binding to the wall of the bladder. Recent clinical studies, reported in the December 2004 issue of the "American Family Physician," found that long-term use of cranberry supplements reduced the risk and occurrence of bladder infections.

Uva Ursi

Uva ursi, a small cranberry also known as bearberry, is a Native American remedy used to treat urinary tract infections and bladder inflammation. The leaves of the plant, found in tea and capsule form, act as an antiseptic and diuretic. The University of Maryland Medial Center warns that uva ursi may be toxic to the liver if taken in large quantities. Do not take uva ursi for more than five days in a row.

Green Tea

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the polyphenols in green tea may play an important role in protecting the bladder and reducing the risk of bladder cancer. Preliminary research has shown that women who consumed powered green tea were less likely to develop bladder cancer. Green tea is available in caffeinated or decaffeinated form and found in tea varieties or capsules.

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root, found in tea or extracts, acts as a mild diuretic, which may help to reduce bladder discomfort and the urgent need to urinate. Dandelion helps to detoxify the liver and gallbladder, aiding in the removal of waste. As a diuretic, this herb promotes the release of fluids from the tissues, helping to flush the kidneys and the bladder. Holding onto urine for long periods of time can increase the risk of bladder infections.
