A variety of conditions can cause you to have a stomach ache, including over-eating, indigestion and anxiety. Whether it is the food you eat, your body's nerves or a combination of both, stomach aches can cause you to feel much discomfort. Fortunately, herbal remedies in the form of teas or capsules can provide you with some relief. Before trying any of these remedies, let your doctor know.

Chamomile

Chamomile is an anti-oxidant and an antispasmodic that has a calming effect on your body. Drinking chamomile tea is effective in alleviating indigestion and stomach cramps. As such, you can use it to relieve stomach aches as well as nervous tension. It is also used to treat heartburn and flatulence. Although use of chamomile is generally safe, if you have a sensitivity to ragweed, daisies, marigolds or chrysanthemums, taking chamomile may cause you to have an allergic reaction. You should discuss using chamomile with your doctor to avoid any negative side effects.

Peppermint

If you have stomach aches after eating too much, soothe your symptoms by drinking peppermint tea. Peppermint contains menthol, which has an antispasmodic effect on the muscles in your stomach, digestive tract and intestines. Though drinking peppermint tea regularly is believed by some herbalists to enable your gastrointestinal system to function more smoothly, doctors warn that regular use may cause heartburn, according to Readers Digest. Always consult your doctor prior to beginning any herbal treatment.

Ginger

By increasing the production of saliva and other digestive fluids, ginger helps move the digestive process along. Ginger also decreases the amount of swelling in your digestive track since it is an anti-inflammatory. In addition to indigestion, you can also use ginger to reduce pain caused by gas, constipation and cramping. Also, if you experience nausea or vomiting, ginger can help ease your stomach pain. That is why ginger ale is a common treatment for an upset stomach. However, increased nausea, bloating and heartburn are side effects of ginger. It has also been found to interact with some prescription medications. Inform your doctor if you plan to use ginger ale to remedy your stomach pain.

Rosemary

Rosemary can alleviate stomach cramps, bloating and indigestion when ingested or taken externally. To ingest rosemary, you first have to infuse 2 to 4 grams of the dried leaf with boiling water and let it steep for about 10 minutes. You have to strain it before drinking it. You can then drink it throughout the day -- but not before bedtime because its stimulant qualities may keep you from falling asleep. You can also use rosemary as a topical herbal remedy by diluting the essential oil and applying it to your skin. Essential oil cannot be applied to the skin without being diluted and can never be ingested. If you doctor permits your use of rosemary, only use it as directed by your doctor.
