More than one billion adults are overweight, according to the book, "Pomegranate: The Most Medicinal Fruit" by Robert A. Newman, Ephraim P. Lansky and Melissa Lynn Block. Excessive weight can cause many health problems, including risk of heart disease and diabetes; therefore it's important to seek ways to reduce your weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Pomegranate green tea may be helpful for weight loss because it increases the metabolic rate, or thermogenesis in your body. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns about your weight and overall health.

Health Benefits

William E. Muirhead writes in his book, "Green Tea - Its Hidden Benefits" that green tea has been a health elixir since the Ming Dynasty in China. It is full of catechin polyphenols, which makes it rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight off free radicals and keep the body free of disease. Green tea may also help lower "bad" or LDL cholesterol and helps improve a balanced ratio of cholesterol in the body. And drinking green tea may help destroy harmful bacteria. Substances found in green tea may prevent tooth decay and food poisoning from occurring, according to Muirhead.

In the book, "Eating Smart and Losing Weight Made Easy" by Alex A. Lluch drinking any kind of green tea, such as pomegranate flavored green tea, may help you burn fat as well as speed up metabolism. The substances in green tea may help increase fat oxidation and increase thermogenesis, which raises your body temperature as a result of the body burning fat. Green tea may also help prevent storage of excess sugar and fat in your body. Green tea contains the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which has been shown to be effective at regulating glucose levels and suppressing appetite.

Pomegranate and Weight Loss

Newman, Lansky and Block write that pomegranate seed oil may help decrease the storage of fat in the body. Pomegranate is also an important source of biomolecules which help fight off the adverse effects of obesity and help bring the metabolic rate into balance and proper function. Conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA in the fruit may also help the body shed excess pounds. CLA may lower insulin resistance and reduce inflammation in the body. It is suggested to drink up to five cups of pomegranate green tea to notice effects. Not all pomegranate green tea contains pomegranate seed oil; some may contain a concentrated extract of the juice which still delivers health benefits.

If you have concerns about your weight it is important to check with your doctor before implementing a weight loss plan. A comprehensive plan should include a healthy diet, physical exercise and lifestyle changes. Drinking pomegranate green tea alone will not help you lose weight. Green tea also contains 35 to 60 milligrams of caffeine in an 8-ounce cup -- roughly half of what you find in a cup of coffee -- according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Excess caffeine intake may cause nervousness and insomnia.
