Fibromyalgia refers to a chronic and crippling disease where you feel fatigued and experience pain at certain tender points on your body. The Mayo Clinic states that most people suffering from fibromyalgia experience trouble sleeping and have accompanying medical conditions such as depression, osteoarthritis (joint pain as a result of overuse) and post-traumatic stress disorder. Visit your doctor to find out what fibromyalgia treatments will work for you.
Pain Relievers
Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, tramadol or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen, can help decrease your pain and stiffness from fibromyalgia, according to the Mayo Clinic. At times, these medications are most effective when used in combination. Your doctor will develop the best pain reliever regimen for you.
Antidepressant Medications
The National Fibromyalgia Association states that antidepressants such as duloxetine can help relieve pain and regulate sleep when given at low dosages. If you are experiencing depression along with your pain symptoms, your doctor might prescribe these antidepressant medications at higher dosages.
Anti-Seizure Medications
Medications normally used to treat seizures (convulsions) can be used to treat fibromyalgia. The Mayo Clinic states that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved pregabilin as the first drug to successfully treat fibromyalgia. Gabapentin is also used to treat fibromyalgia symptoms.
Alternative Treatments
The National Fibromyalgia Association states that alternative therapies such as physical therapy, massage and acupuncture can help soothe your fibromyalgia pain. A physical therapist can teach you gentle exercises that will help stretch your muscles and decrease your pain. Massage treatments can also help loosen tight muscles and relieve your pain. Acupuncture involves placing thin needles at strategic points on your body to help decrease your fibromyalgia symptoms.
