Yeast, or Candida albicans, is a common fungus present in small amounts in the vagina, mouth, digestive tract and on the skin. Typically Candida does not cause disease or infection and exists in balance with other micro-organisms in your body. However, an increase in Candida can result in a yeast infection. Drinking cranberry juice can help to prevent, treat and reduce the severity of yeast infections.

Yeast Infections

Yeast infections occur in the mouth, on the skin and most commonly in the vagina. As many as three of four women experience a yeast infection in their lifetime. Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include itching, swelling, burning sensation and the release of a thick, white discharge. Drinking cranberry juice is most effective in instances of mild infection.

Cranberry Juice and Treatment

Cranberry juice can be an effective aid in treating a yeast infection, as it contains substances that prevent bacteria from clinging to the digestive tract and vagina. By drinking cranberry juice at the start of an infection, you can help flush the overgrowth of Candida from your body. Because sugar stimulates the production of yeast in the body, it is important to drink unsweetened cranberry juice. Pure cranberry juice has a strong, sour flavor that you can make more palatable by mixing with water. If you are unable to tolerate the taste of cranberry juice, cranberry pills serve as an effective substitute and are available at most pharmacies and health food stores.

Cranberry Juice and Prevention

Including cranberry juice as part of your regular diet can also help prevent yeast infections by decreasing the amount of bacteria present in the vagina, urinary tract and digestive tract. Rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and phytochemicals, cranberry juice promotes pH balance and supports the immune system. These benefits protect against Candida overgrowth and help maintain your body's proper balance of naturally occurring bacteria.

Warnings

Although yeast infections are common and typically benign, if you experience persistent or severe yeast infections, consult your doctor as you may require more intensive treatment and long-term dietary modification. Frequent antibiotic use, immune impairment and diabetes all increase your risk of developing yeast infections. Yeast infections typically resolve within a week to 10 days, depending on their severity. If cranberry juice and other over-the-counter remedies do not offer relief within that time, seek medical attention. Your symptoms may indicate a more serious health problem.
