Prostatitis is an often painful infection or increase in size of the prostate gland. This gland located beneath the bladder is about the size of a walnut. The cause of prostatitis is a bacterial infection or an unknown cause. This disorder causes an urgent need to urinate, pain while urinating and ejaculating, urine flow problems and pain in the testicles and penis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

A Natural Treatment

Bee pollen has helped treat symptoms of chronic prostatitis, according to University of Utah Health Care. The bee pollen used to treat this disorder contains the male reproductive cells from flowers and the bee's digestive enzymes. It also has amino acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Treatment Effects Still Undocumented

The positive effects of treatment with bee pollen have not yet been documented with large-scale studies. More studies are needed to analyze if and how bee pollen treats prostatitis. However, the American Urological Foundation says that bee pollen is used to treat prostatitis.

Typical Daily Dose

When bee pollen is used to treat prostatitis, a dose is typically 500 mg two to four times daily. Talk to your doctor to ask about the safety of bee pollen treatment before taking this substance. If you proceed with bee pollen treatment, start with a tiny amount of bee pollen in the beginning to ensure that you do not have an allergic reaction to it.

Allergic Reactions

Some patients do have strong allergic reactions to bee pollen. It can cause anaphylaxis, which is a sudden, strong, possibly fatal allergic reaction, says University of Utah Health Care. The components of bee pollen vary depending on the flower where the bee collected the pollen. Also, environmental toxins are sometimes found in bee pollen if the flower was in an area with contaminated soil or air.
