A sweat suit, also called a sauna suit, is a suit made from nylon, rubberized vinyl or plastic. The material traps heat inside, which causes a person to sweat. This causes the wearer to lose "water weight." These suits are commonly used by boxers, mixed martial artists and wrestlers prior to "weighing in" for a bout.
Increase Circulation
When you don a sauna suit and begin to exercise, your pulse rate and metabolism increase. Blood rushes to your skin as your blood vessels dilate. Your skin and extremities benefit from this increased circulation. Increased circulation improves oxygen delivery to the organs and skin, which in turn promotes organ function and cell growth. Improved circulation can help with blood pressure problems and improve heart health.
Stay Warm in Cool Weather
When the weather is cold, proper clothing should be worn during outdoor exercise. A sauna suit can help increase body heat, and then help to keep that heat during exercise. The fabric also helps to keep a layer of protection against the elements by helping to keep a person dry in snow or rain.
Accelerate Weight Loss
The number one reason people wear sauna suits is to lose weight. The fabric causes the body heat to rise, and increases perspiration. This leads to rapid weight loss as the water is lost from the body. The drawback to this type of weight loss is that the weight comes back as soon as the person rehydrates.
Caution
Although used extensively by athletes, this type of weight loss is not sustainable and does pose some risks. If worn for too long, a person may become dehydrated, overheat and suffer from heat stroke. Sweat suits may also cause extreme discomfort to some people when the suit sticks to the skin. If your intention is to lose weight and keep it off, a sweat suit is not your best option. A balanced diet and exercise will help you to achieve a safe, sustainable weight loss.
