Dermatitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the skin. There are several types of dermatitis, including eczema, allergic contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis (cradle cap). Symptoms of dermatitis include itching, scaling, flaking, oozing, scabbing, blistering, thickening, crusting and redness of the skin. Homeopathy is a type of alternative medicine that considers each individual's unique physical, mental and emotional makeup. In contrast to conventional medicine, homeopathy does not seek to suppress symptoms but uses non-toxic remedies designed to increase the body's natural ability to heal. There are several homeopathic treatments used for dermatitis.

Antimonium Crudum

This homeopathic substance is used to treat skin that is cracked and thickened. It also is known as black sulfide of antimony. Antimonium crudum is indicated for dermatitis and eczema that are irritated by the sun and from warm conditions. Individuals treated with Antimonium crudum typically are irritable, sensitive, shy and sentimental.

Apis Mellifica

This substance is derived from the poison of honeybees. It is used to treat skin that is red and swollen. Apis mellifica is indicated for individuals whose skin conditions are made worse by heat and pressure and are improved by the cold. The mental condition of individuals treated with Apis mellifica typically is apathetic, listless, irritable and sad.

Rhus Toxicodendron

This treatment is used for itching and burning. It also is used for eczema with blisters that are relieved with hot compresses. Rhus toxicodendrom is derived from poison ivy and is indicated for skin conditions that are made worse by the cold and while resting and improved by warmth and movement. Individuals who may benefit from this treatment typically are restless, anxious and irritable.

Sulphur

Sulphur is a homeopathic substance used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including rashes, eczema and dermatitis. It typically is used to treat itching, burning and scaling skin that is made worse with warmth and bathing. Individuals also may experience moist or dry skin eruptions. Sulphur is especially recommended for patients who have tried other remedies for treating dermatitis and eczema without success.

Urtica Urens

This homeopathic substance is derived from stinging nettle plants. Urtica urens is indicated for dermatitis that burns, stings and swells. It also is used for dermatitis caused by allergic reactions to food or resulting from heat. Skin conditions treated by urtica urens are irritated by the cold, water and scratching.
