According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "one out of six people 14 to 49 years of age have genital HSV-2 infection." There are two forms of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Cold sores typically develop in people with HSV-1. Genital herpes result from both forms of the virus, but HSV-2 is the most common cause. People transmit herpes through herpes lesions and through the skin even when sores are not present. There is no cure for herpes as of 2010. However, many holistic remedies can help prevent and heal outbreaks.

Diet

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), a proper diet made up of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats helps to improve the immune system. Having a strong immune system allows you to fight herpes infections more effectively. On the other hand, certain comfort foods like chocolate, nuts and cola are known to trigger herpes outbreaks.

Lysine

Consuming the amino acid lysine either through diet (from sources like chicken, fish, potatoes and eggs) or through a supplement can shorten the time it takes for outbreaks to heal and reduce the chance of future outbreaks. The UMMC suggests consuming 1 to 3g per day. However, people with high cholesterol, high triglycerides or heart disease should consult a doctor prior to increasing lysine intake.

Lemon Balm

According to the UMMC, lemon balm may help heal cold sores caused by HSV-1. Lemon balm contains various antioxidants, vitamins and the mineral selenium, all of which strengthen the immune system. It also contains four antiviral compounds that target the herpes virus.

Echinacea

According to MotherNature.com, echinacea has both antiviral and immune-stimulating properties. MotherNature.com recommends using echinacea in a tincture: add 1/2 tsp. of tincture to tea or juice, three times a day. Quality echinacea causes your tongue to tingle or go numb temporarily.

Exercise

Exercise helps to improve your overall health, and improved health means an improved immune system. HerpesOnline.org advises people to exercise 20 minutes a day.

Sleep

Poor sleep habits can trigger herpes outbreaks. The Mayo Clinic advises getting between seven and eight hours of quality sleep each night. Frequent interruptions during sleep decrease the amount of quality sleep you get.
