Natural alternatives to antibiotics have been used for centuries to fight various types of infection. These remedies are still used today with both safety and efficacy. Dosage recommendations are for adults. Proper dosing for children can be determined based on weight. Divide the weight of the child by 150, and use that portion for dosing. For example, a 50-lb. child will receive 1/3 of the recommended adult dose.

Echinacea

Echinacea is one of the most commonly used herbs in the United States. It is often used as a preventative for the common cold, treatment for the flu and viral infections, and for skin conditions such as eczema and acne. Echinacea is often used in combination with garlic and goldenseal to treat bacterial infections such as sinusitis and bronchitis. Adults can safely take 3 to 7.5g a day, without exceeding 50g in a week. Be sure to consult a physician if a fever of 102 degrees F or more is present. Those with autoimmune disorders should also consult their doctor before use, as echinacea may stimulate the immune system. Taking echinacea with prescription medications is not recommended.

Garlic

Garlic was used to treat parasites and other infections by the ancient Egyptians. It was also used during both world wars when no other antiseptic was accessible. Crushed garlic was smeared over surface wounds and bandaged to prevent infection. A sulfur compound called allicin is found in the oil of garlic. Consuming garlic allows this oil to infiltrate the digestive system and bloodstream. Excretion then takes place via the lungs resulting in a strong odor long after the consumption of garlic has taken place. Garlic is very effective in the treatment of respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, the common cold and influenza. It is best to consume in its whole form by eating one clove a day for the long term. To treat acute conditions, up to three cloves each day may be taken short-term. When using garlic extract in tablet or capsule form, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for dosing.

Goldenseal

The antimicrobial, antibacteria and anti-inflammatory properties of goldenseal make it a very potent herbal remedy for chronic infections. It is often combined with echinacea to boost the body's ability to ward off lingering infections. Goldenseal has also been used as a tonic for the health of the mucous membranes, which makes it particularly useful in cases of sinusitis and middle ear infections. The detoxifying properties of goldenseal strengthen the health of the gastrointestinal tract. It can be useful in relieving symptoms of yeast infections, hepatitis and peptic ulcers. Goldenseal is best taken in tincture form at 2 to 4g a day without exceeding 30g in one week. This remedy is not suitable for children, and should not be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not exceed recommended dosages as excessive amounts of goldenseal can irritate the mucous membranes.
