Diarrhea is a common medical condition that results from another medical condition and is treated with diet modification. If you're experiencing diarrhea, call your doctor before making any changes to the foods you're eating. One of the first modifications the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse recommends is to increase your liquid intake. Gatorade is recommended because it is enriched with electrolytes that help to replenish the body of lost water.

Diarrhea affects almost everyone at some point. It is a condition that causes loose, watery and frequent stools that are accompanied by cramping, abdominal pain and nausea. The condition can last for a few days or for a few weeks, but should be evaluated by a doctor if it persists for more than 48 hours. The Body says that diarrhea is not an isolated loose stool but rather consistent watery stools that are urgent and at times explosive.

Cause

Diarrhea occurs as a symptom of another complication that is transpiring in the body. A viral intestinal infection such as the stomach flu is one cause of diarrhea. It is usually accompanied with nausea, vomiting and at times a slight fever. Using antibiotics can also cause diarrhea because antibiotics kill bacteria in the gut that helps regulate your bowels. Food poisoning causes diarrhea within two to four hours after consuming food or beverages that are contaminated with viruses, parasites or bacteria, according to The Body.

Gatorade Purpose

The main complication from diarrhea is dehydration. When your digestive system is attempting to empty itself, it will pass whatever is being digested quickly to rid the body of the harmful substance. Food isn't fully processed, and water is expelled from the body before it can be properly absorbed. This can lead to dehydration, which is a medical concern that can lead to death if not properly treated. Gatorade is a recommended way to increase liquid intake and help maintain proper absorption because it contains electrolytes. Talk with your doctor before using Gatorade to treat your condition.

Diet

When you experience diarrhea, the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse recommends modifying your diet. Eat small portions of bland foods, such as bananas, toast, boiled potatoes, white rice, cooked carrots and crackers. Avoid foods that are high in fiber, high in fat and contain spice. Do not eat or drink products that contain dairy, caffeine or alcohol.
