Removing the yolk from an egg removes the fat and cholesterol, but it also removes beneficial nutrients. ConAgra Foods' Egg Beaters Original is made from real eggs with the yolk removed, and then fortified with vitamins and nutrients lost with the yolks. If you're trying to cut down on fat and cholesterol in your diet, Egg Beaters Original offers a good alternative to eggs.
Same Protein As Eggs, Less Calories
One serving of Egg Beaters Original, 1/4 cup, supplies 6 g of protein, the same amount of protein found in one large egg. Dieters will be happy to learn that Egg Beaters Original has less than half the calories of eggs: 30 in one serving of Egg Beaters Original versus 75 in an egg.
Vitamin-Fortified
Egg Beaters are fortified with vitamins A, B-12, D and E, as well as folate and riboflavin, according to ConAgra, making them more vitamin-laden than natural eggs.
Egg Beaters Whites
Egg Beaters Whites have only 25 calories per 1/4 cup serving, 5 less than Egg Beaters Original. Egg Beaters Whites match the Original with no fat or cholesterol. This product has only egg whites and is not fortified with vitamins. Egg Beaters Whites delivers 5 g of protein, 1 g less than Egg Beaters Original.
Other Varieties
The Southwestern and Garden Vegetable varieties also contain no fat or cholesterol, and have the same number of calories per serving as Egg Beaters Original. Cheese and Chive adds a small amount of cholesterol, 1 g of fat -- half of it as saturated fat -- and nearly double the sodium present in the Original, with 210 mg.
These varieties contain 5 g of protein per serving, one less than Egg Beaters Original's 6 g of protein per serving.
Baking
Baking with Egg Beaters instead of eggs is a smart way to reduce fat and cholesterol. One egg contains 3.7 g of fat - including 1.1 g of saturated fat -- and 157 mg of cholesterol. That's 6 percent of the recommended daily fat intake, and a whopping 52 percent of recommended cholesterol intake. Those numbers add up when baking with recipes that call for two or three eggs, or even more. However, ConAgra does not recommend using Egg Beaters in recipes that require whipping, such as meringue or angel food cake.
