Although a Starbucks black coffee has only 5 calories, if you add sugar, syrups, cream, milk, whipped cream or toppings, your quick-pick-me-up becomes an unhealthy high-calorie drink. In fact, the American Heart Association links the daily consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks to diabetes and heart disease.
Size Matters
While ordering a Starbucks coffee you should look at the ounces rather than the names of sizes. A "short" 8 oz. coffee equals the amount you might pour at home into a regular coffee cup. A "tall" 12 oz. coffee contains 50 percent more coffee and just about that many more calories. The "grande" 16 oz. coffee and the "venti" 20 oz. coffee supply substantially more coffee and calories -- as does the 24 oz. "venti" iced beverages.
Starbucks Espresso Drinks
Starbucks nutrition information notes that an 8 oz. short 2 percent caffé latte contains 100 calories. The 20 oz. venti size contains 240 calories. Consider ordering the 2 percent cappuccino instead with 80 calories in the 8 oz. cup and 150 calories in the 20 oz. cup.
Starbucks Espresso with Flavor
Adding calories along with the flavor, an 8 oz. short 2 percent caffe mocha has 130 calories, while the 20 oz. size has 340 calories, reports Starbucks. An 8 oz. eggnog latte contains 230 calories, and the 20 oz. size weighs-in at 610 calories.
Starbucks Frappuccino
A blended iced-coffee beverage, the 12 oz. tall 2 percent caffe vanilla Frappuccino comes with 220 calories, according to Starbucks, and the 24 oz. venti with 400 calories. The 12 oz. toffee mocha Frappuccino has 310 calories and the 24 oz. has 470 calories. If you add whipped cream, the drink contains 580 calories.
