PATTY BURROWS: How to teach your child math. It's important to teach your child math in many different ways. First, you can start doing number recognition. For instance, you can take two grapes and one more grape with it, and then count how many grapes do you have now. One, two, three. You can also count shapes. For instance, you can count the circles here. You have one, two, three, four circles. How many would it be if we put one oval with those four circles? Let's count. One, two, three, four, five. Make sure that when you're counting and you're putting numbers together, you're counting and doing a one to one correspondence. You don't say, "Oh there are four circles there, one, two, three, four," but make sure to point to each one when you count. One, two, three, four. Math is very representational and it's important for children to learn that a number represents a quantity.
