Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters in your brain that play a role in human behavior. Neurotransmitters transport nerve impulses between cells and help maintain a healthy brain and mood. Serotonin may play a role in relieving depression, reducing anxiety and decreasing sleep problems. Dopamine may help in normal movement and emotional mood and reactions. Low levels of these neurotransmitters may play a role in depression and symptoms associated with depression. Consuming certain supplements may help build the amounts of dopamine and serotonin in your body to aid in a healthy mind and body.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort is an herb that is commonly used for depression and symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, sleeping difficulty and appetite loss. According to Medline Plus, St. John's wort can increase serotonin content in your brain. This herb may cause health complications if taken in combination with other drugs. Consult your doctor before taking this supplement for any condition, and do not replace other forms of treatment with this herb.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is an essential vitamin that helps maintain a healthy nervous and immune system. This vitamin is required for the production of important substances, including serotonin and dopamine, and this helps enable normal communication between cells. According to the National Institutes of Health, lower levels of serotonin are associated with conditions such as depression and migraines. However, vitamin B6 has not been proven to relieve these symptoms. More research is needed to confirm a benefit. In addition to a supplement form, vitamin B6 may be found in foods such as beans, meat, poultry, fish and fortified breads and cereals.

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that your body cannot make but is required for a healthy body. To have this amino acid in your body, you have to consume it in food sources. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, phenylalanine can raise your levels of dopamine. Research indicates this may play a role in improving mood in people with depression.
