Hair that has been severely damaged may not be salvageable. However, there is much you can do to reconstruct the hair if you act quickly enough and apply intensive treatments. In the meantime, cut your split ends and as much damaged hair as possible. Have a professional cut your hair, especially if you plan on cutting it short. That way you’ll have a cut you love until the new healthy hair grows in.

Stop using hairstyling appliances, such as flat irons and hair dryers for a while. The heat can burn and damage your hair even further. Also, avoid perms and other chemical treatments that can cause dry frizzy hair.
Deep condition your hair twice a week using a product made especially for damaged hair. You can also apply the contents of a Vitamin E caplet -- simply open and pour -- or olive oil. For best results, warm the oil for a few seconds in the microwave before applying it to just-washed hair. Rinse as usual.
Don’t wash your hair every day. It strips the natural oils from your hair makes it drier and likely to break during combing and everyday handling. Instead, wash two to three times a week or less if your hair is naturally dry.
Switch to products made especially for damaged hair. You can try shampoos labeled as gentle, as they won’t dry or strip your hair of its natural oils. If your hair is colored, use products made especially for colored hair, as they tend to be rich and leave your hair soft while maintaining its color.
Mix up home remedies for your damaged hair. Apply mayonnaise or a beaten egg directly to the hair -- not the scalp. Wrap with a warm wet towel and leave it on for a few minutes. Wash and rinse your hair as usual.
Take a multivitamin. While vitamins won’t repair hair that is already damaged, they will help new hair grow stronger.
