Cyanocobalamin Side Effects

Cyanocobalamin, also known as vitamin B12, has uses in the treatment of pernicious anemia as well as building up the vitamin in people who have a B12 deficiency. This deficiency may occur in people because of related health issues. This medication is given by injection or spray at a hospital or, because of a possible allergic reaction, at the primary physician's office. It is not therapeutic if taken by mouth. It needs to be absorbed into the blood stream by injection or by spray.

Diarrhea

The person taking the cyanocobalamin medicine may get diarrhea, generally at the outset of treatment with the vitamin. Most often, Drugs.com states, this side effect will occur as a temporary and mild phenomenon. A decrease in appetite may occur because of this common side effect. For most cases of diarrhea, the condition will exhibit accompanying cramps in the abdominal area. If diarrhea appears severe, or if it does not end without aid, Drugs.com suggests a consultation with a doctor.

Chest Pain

A tightening, grip-like feeling or tightness in the chest may occur as a severe side effect of this drug. This side effect warrants a trip to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment. An underlying problem may cause of this severe side effect.

Difficulty Breathing

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath can be a life-threatening event and warrants a trip to the emergency room. This is a possible severe side effect of this medication. Problems breathing may also be indicative of another underlying health issue. Breathing may feel labored or the person may feel she cannot get enough air in her lungs. This can cause both anxiety and panic.

Swelling

Some people may experience swelling throughout their bodies when they take cyanocobalamin. This serious side effect requires medical help. Swelling may occur in specific locations or may make the entire body blow up beyond the normal size.

Arrhythmia

Cyanocobalamin can induce a heartbeat fluctuation or arrhythmia in which the heart does not beat regularly. Not only does this feel terrible, it can cause a serious health situation such as cardiac arrest.
