Regulate statin induced constipation by consuming foods containing insoluble fiber. According to MedlinePlus, constipation is defined as three or less bowel movements per week. Stool may be dry and painful to pass. The recommended treatment for constipation is to drink more water, exercise, sleep well through the night, and consume high fiber foods. Fiber is found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes and insoluble fiber -- the most beneficial kind ofr constipation -- is found mainly in wheat bran, whole grains, and vegetables. Increase in these foods with the addition of water may alleviate constipation.
Wheat bran
Wheat bran cereal is the most common form to purchase wheat bran. In 1/2 cup of wheat bran cereal there ,are over 11 g insoluble fiber. The USDA recommends about 25 g fiber per day. Wheat bran cereal does not just have to be eaten as a cereal. It can be crushed up and used like bread crumbs and used in cooking. Wheat bran itself can also be purchased. It has a fine texture and can be sprinkled over most foods for added fiber without adding too strong a flavor.
Whole Grains
Wheat is not the only grain to contain insoluble fiber. Whole grains such as barley, millet and bulgur wheat contain high amounts. Barley has almost 4 g of fiber in each half cup serving. Cooked millet and bulgur wheat have 2.7 g and 2.3 g respectively. Always choose whole grains over refined grains. White bread, white rice and crackers and snacks made with refined white flour do not contain any natural fiber.
Vegetables
All vegetables contain fiber. Some are higher in soluble fiber, others are high in insoluble fiber. Parsnips have more than 4 g of insoluble fiber in each 1 cup cooked. Spinach has over 3 g in each 1 cup cooked. Okra, sweet potatoes, turnips, zucchini and squash all contain between 1 and 3 g of insoluble fiber. Consume two to three servings of these vegetables daily, along with 8 glasses of water, to help eliminate constipation.
