Periactin is a brand name version of the prescription drug cyproheptadine. This drug is usually used to treat the symptoms of allergic reactions and seasonal allergies. It is also used as an appetite stimulant to help adults and children gain weight, according to a report in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Generally, it is used for patients who are underweight and have loss of appetite.

Step 1

Visit your doctor to determine if Periactin is a good option to help you gain weight. Be sure that your doctor has a complete list of all medications you take, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter medications as these may not be compatible with Periactin. Ensure that your doctor has a complete medical history for you so that he can prescribe the proper dose. If you have stomach ulcers, asthma attacks, high blood pressure, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, hyperactive thyroid or heart disease, you may not be able to take Periactin or you may need an adjusted dose. People who are pregnant and breastfeeding may be advised not to take Periactin.

Step 2

Fill your prescription for Periactin at a reputable pharmacy. If you have never taken Periactin, ask the pharmacist to explain the dosing instructions to you so that you fully understand how to take the medication.

Step 3

Take Periactin according to the dosing instructions on your prescription bottle. PubMed Health notes that Periactin is usually taken two to three times per day. It is prescribed in either a pill or liquid form. If you are prescribed the liquid form of the drug, use the measuring cup provided with the medication to measure it as regular kitchen spoons and measuring cups are not always accurate. Be sure to take Periactin with a full glass of water.

Step 4

Pay attention to how you feel after you take Periactin. Possible side effects include dry mouth, upset stomach, drowsiness and insomnia. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction to Periactin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, hives and facial or oral swelling.

Step 5

Eat healthy foods often while you are on Periactin. It may be tempting to eat unhealthy foods to make you gain weight, but your goal is to gain healthy weight instead of fat weight. Fruits, whole grains, vegetables, beans, lean protein sources and dairy products are good options for you to eat to help you gain weight.

Step 6

Drink plenty of fluids while you are taking Periactin. It is important that do not get dehydrated. If you are thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated. Water, fruit juice and milk are good options to drink. Try to stay away from sugary drinks and sodas as they may not help your thirst.

Keep your Periactin in a cool, dry, dark place.

It is possible to overdose on Periactin, so don't take more than your prescribed dose. Extreme drowsiness, pale skin, confusion, large pupils, very dry mouth, vomiting, fainting and hallucinations are signs of an overdose.
