Certain aspects of your diet can cause painful urination. A burning sensation while urinating may indicate that you’ve consumed too much acidic or spicy foods or drinks, or it could be something much more serious. To rule out the possibility of infection, schedule an appointment with your health care provider to determine the exact cause of burning urination.

Acidic Foods and Drinks

Acidic foods and drinks, such as grapefruits and grapefruit juice, can cause painful urination. This is especially true if you suffer from a bladder or urinary tract infection. Citrus fruits and fruit juices can irritate your bladder. Bladder irritation can sometimes lead to infection as it becomes easier for bacteria to invade your urinary system as it becomes compromised. Drinking large quantities of grapefruit juice can burn even when an infection is not present simply because of the acid that is present in grapefruit juice.

Other Bladder Irritants

Aside from highly citrus foods and drinks, other parts of your diet can also irritate your bladder and cause painful urination. Carbonated drinks, such as soda, caffeine and spicy foods can have the same effect as drinking grapefruit juice. Eliminating these bladder irritants from your diet can help prevent bladder irritation.

Home Remedies

While you can change your diet, there are other ways that you may possibly be able to enjoy fruit juices, such as grapefruit juice. Drink plenty of water when you do consume citrus foods and drinks or other bladder irritants. Water can help dilute the concentration of your urine, which in turn decreases the risk of bladder irritation and burning while urinating.


The burning sensation that you experience may not be related to diet or drinking certain beverages such as grapefruit juice. You can experience burning or painful urination due to other causes such as soaps, bubble baths or hygiene sprays. While you may associate urinary burning with a certain food or drink, it might have little to do with that particular item. You could be developing an infection without realizing it and it may burn to urinate during certain times of the day, such as in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated. If you are developing an infection, your doctor may need to prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection.
