LIVESTRONG.COM: What was your life like before joining LIVESTRONG.COM?
Peter: I was very depressed before starting my journey to a healthier lifestyle. I typically ate out four times a day. I did not exercise, and I was prediabetic.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What was your inspiration to make a change?
Peter: My turning point was when both of my parents passed away in 2012 as a result of poor health choices. They were both under the age of 60 when they died.
LIVESTRONG.COM: How did LIVESTRONG.COM help you lose weight?
Peter: The LIVESTRONG Calorie Tracker app made me second-guess the foods I was eating. The built-in food scanner was very educational. When I scanned a food product to find out how many calories it contained, I learned to instantly get rid of unhealthy foods that were part of my diet in the past. It was also fun tracking my water and making sure I met or exceeded my daily water goal. It took me about a year and five months to lose 100 pounds, and I’m still losing.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What was your support system like?
Peter: My main source of support during my weight-loss journey has been the LIVESTRONG.COM community. Seeing other members share their progress on the community message boards in the app kept me motivated to achieve my own goals.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s your favorite way to work out?
Peter: My favorite workout is riding bikes with my 9-year-old nephew. We usually go on a five-mile bike ride every Saturday.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s your weekly exercise schedule?
Peter: I typically work out for about two hours every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tuesday and Thursday I work out at the gym. Saturday is an outdoor workout. For these workouts, one hour is strictly cardio (usually the elliptical machine) and the other hour is weightlifting.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s a typical day of meals and snacks?
Peter: I eat three meals and one snack a day. Breakfast is usually oatmeal or a Special K cereal with almond milk. Lunch is a nice salad loaded with veggies and skinless grilled chicken. Midday I usually have an apple and a banana for a snack, and for dinner I typically have baked fish or chicken with a sweet potato and steamed broccoli.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s the range of calories you eat per day?
Peter: Currently, my calorie goal is 2,168 calories per day.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What are the healthy staples that are always in your kitchen?
Peter: I always have apples, oranges, bananas, oatmeal, Special K products, unsalted peanuts, almond milk, kale, spinach, skinless chicken and tilapia. I also keep lots of water (and only water) on hand to drink.
LIVESTRONG.COM: How do you strategize for meals?
Peter: I go grocery shopping on Sunday and make my breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack for the week.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s the biggest challenge you faced?
Peter: It’s a slow process in the beginning, which can make sticking with the healthy lifestyle changes hard. It helped once people started noticing the progress I was making. Once I heard the first person make a positive comment about my weight loss I was motivated to pump up my workouts in order to hear it more often. My biggest challenge was just getting started in the first place and not continuing to tell myself, “I’ll start next week.”
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s your biggest secret to success that you want to share with others?
Peter: My best advice (and what works for me) is to find something or someone that you really love and commit to exercising and making healthy choices for both yourself and for that other person (or reason). Regardless of whether or not that something or someone is still here with us or not, it really helps keep you inspired and motivated to keep working hard and stay focused on reaching your goal.
LIVESTRONG.COM: What’s your life like now?
Peter: I feel great about myself now that I’m no longer prediabetic. I am able to go for a run without stopping to rest, something I could not do before making these healthy changes in my life. My workouts are consistent, and I am still using the LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker because my goal is to still lose 60 more pounds. After I reach my goal I plan to continue using the Calorie Tracker to maintain my weight and stay healthy — and to keep participating in the LIVESTRONG.COM community to share my story and help motivate others.
