Your kids may think that the only fun racing games require a television and a video-game controller. However, you can show them that there are some enjoyable racing games that can be played outside. Some ideas for games include the pillow case, animal, spoon and egg, and cup and water races.

Pillow Case Race

If you are looking for a racing game that is both competitive and humorous, then find some old pillow cases. Have your children put their feet in the pillow cases and pull the edges up around their hips. Designate a finish line and have the children race to it by hopping in the pillow cases. You may find it entertaining when the kids topple over in their attempts to get to the finish line.

Animal Race

Kids pretend to be animals in this racing game. Pick some kids to be frogs, some to be crabs and others to be ducks. The kids must walk like their animals in order to get to the finish line. The frogs crouch down and leap forward. The crabs walk on their hands and feet in an upward-facing bridge position. The ducks crouch down and waddle toward the finish line. Have the kids try to mimic the sounds of their particular animals; it may be interesting to hear what kinds of noises the kids come up with for the crab. Have the kids switch animals after each race.

Spoon and Egg Race

This racing game may get a little messy, but that’s all part of the fun. To play this game, divide the kids up into equal lines. Place a bucket full of eggs at the front of each line. Place an empty bucket about 50 feet away from each full bucket. The first player in each line must use a spoon to transport an egg to his team’s empty bucket. After the first player drops off an egg, he runs back to the starting line and gives the spoon to the next player. The next player must also transport an egg. If a child drops an egg, then he must pick up as much of it as possible and keep going. The first team to transport all of its eggs is the winner.

Cup and Water Race

This racing game is similar to the spoon and egg race, except you don’t have to give up any omelets. Kids are divided into equal lines with a bucket full of water at the front of their lines. The kids must use a small paper cup to transport the water. Each player carries a full cup of water to another bucket, about 50 feet away, where he empties the cup. The first team to empty its original bucket of water is the winner of the game. However, there is a catch. The winning team must fill the other bucket to a certain level in order to claim victory. If they fall short, the second-place finishers may win. This rule forces the kids to be cautious when racing so that they don’t spill too much water.
