A yoga mat serves as your protection from the hard ground and acts as your own specialized yoga accessory. Keeping it clean is not only imperative for aesthetic reasons, but for sanitary reasons as well. When it comes to yoga mats, it's okay to be selfish; allowing other people to use your mat can lead to the spread of germs. A little simple upkeep is all that's needed to keep your mat not only clean, but sanitary.
Step 1
Mix 2 tbsp. of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle and spray your mat with it after each use. Tea tree is an antifungal that can eliminate and prevent the growth of fungi and mold.
Step 2
Spot clean the mat with a mild detergent and water to clean visibly soiled areas. Make a paste with powdered detergent and water, and gently scrub it into the affected area. Wipe off the area with a damp cloth.
Step 3
Run cool to lukewarm water in the bathtub and completely submerge the mat. Add 2 tbsp. detergent and gently scrub the mat to clean it. Gently press the water from the mat with your hands to wring it out, and hang it up to dry.
Step 4
Sprinkle baking soda all over the mat and let it sit for 2 to 3 hours before shaking it off. The baking soda will absorb any unpleasant lingering odors. Misting the mat with a solution of equal parts vinegar and water will have the same odor-eliminating effect.
Tips and Warnings
- Some mats are machine washable, while others may be sensitive to water, so read the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning your yoga mat.
- Never roll up or store a damp mat, as this will cause it to mold. Make sure your mat is completely dry before storing it.
