The City of Saint George is located in southwestern Utah and was founded by Brigham Young as a cotton-producing Mormon community. Saint George is home to the Saint George Utah Temple, which is the oldest continuously used Mormon Temple in the world. Because Saint George is located in Utah's lowest point, it is surrounded by various mountains and red-sandstone hills or buttes. The city is also surrounded by numerous state and national parks, providing visitors with a wide range of recreational activities.
Hiking
Visitors to Saint George will find numerous nearby parks where they can enjoy hiking. Snow Canyon State Park is only a few minutes outside of Saint George and is a 7,400-acre desert park that has 16 miles of hiking trails. Dixie National Forest's Pine Valley Ranger District is located about 20 minutes from the city and has a number of short hiking trails that range from 1.5 miles one way to three miles one way, though some of them connect up to longer trails within the park.
Horseback Riding
Those visitors wishing to enjoy some horseback riding can do so at nearby Snow Canyon State Park. Snow Canyon has 12 equestrian trails and guided horseback rides can be organized by contacting Snow Canyon Trail Rides. Horseback riding is also allowed at Dixie National Forest.
Camping
The area around Saint George offers visitors plenty of places to go camping. Snow Canyon State Park has 34 tent campsites and 17 RV campsites, 14 of which have water and electric hookups. Dixie National Forest also has nine different campsites, one of which is an equestrian campsite. Other nearby parks that have campgrounds are Quail Creek State Park and Sand Hollow State Park.
Fishing
Although the Saint George area is dry and very desert like, those visitors wishing to do some fishing will find a number of places where they can do so. Quail Creek State Park allows fishing on the approximately 430-square-acre Quail Creek Reservoir, where largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, and rainbow trout can be found. Sand Hollow State Park's, Sand Hollow Reservoir is approximately 1,100-square acres and largemouth bass, bluegill, and bullhead can be fished there.
Canoeing & Kayaking
Visitors to Saint George can also enjoy canoeing and kayaking by driving to the nearby Sand Hollow State Park or Quail Creek State Park. Both the Quail Creek Reservoir and Sand Hollow Reservoir provide paddlers with expansive views of the red-sandstone terrain and the buttes and mountains that surround them.
