Acupuncture has been used in traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, for centuries. TCM practitioners believe weight gain is an imbalance of the liver and the spleen. According to the five-element theory, the spleen is directly related to the digestive system, so it is responsible for making sure the food we eat is turned into qi, which is considered our vital life force. If the spleen is malfunctioning, we feel tired and our metabolism slows down. Other symptoms of a malfunctioning spleen may include diarrhea and water retention.
Importance of Qi
The liver is also involved in balancing the body's qi. If the liver is not functioning correctly, this can affect the spleen's ability to work with the digestive system. Side effects of weak liver function may include a slower metabolism, food cravings and compulsive eating. Along with using specific acupuncture points, most practitioners also recommend a change in diet and suggest herbal supplements.
Considerations
It is important to find an experienced, and qualified, TCM practitioner if you decide to use acupuncture for weight loss. Look for someone with a diploma in Oriental Medicine, or Dipl. O.M., and book a consultation before you decide to go ahead. Check the center is clean, and if you are in any doubt, ask to see their acupuncture certificates and qualifications.
Qualifed Acupuncturists
The Equilibrium Health Center in Fort Worth has two qualified acupuncturists, Farrah Hamraie L.Ac., M.O.M., Dipl. O.M. and Farivash Hamraie L.A.c., Dipl. O.M. Farrah Hamraie is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Texas. She trained at the Dallas College of Oriental Medicine and has a master's in Oriental Medicine.
How Often?
Normally, most acupuncture sessions are tailored to individual needs. Sessions last 30 to 40 minutes, once or twice a week, for around eight to 12 weeks. Treatments may include a combination of ear and body points, ear "staples," which you leave on in between sessions, diet advice and herbs and supplements. Ear acupuncture points are particularly successful for weight loss, as they hold points corresponding to all the body's major organs.
Other Options
Linda N. Hillis also works in Fort Worth and has a practice on University Drive. She has a master's in Oriental Medicine and a diploma in Oriental Medicine. Dennis E. Minotti is on Camp Bowie Boulevard, and Ben Watson on Bailey Avenue also offers acupuncture for weight loss.
Other Considerations
Make sure you eat something light before any acupuncture sessions and avoid caffeine and other stimulants. Wear loose-fitting clothes, and make sure your practitioner knows of any prescription medications you may be taking.
