Ramsey is a suburb north of Minneapolis located in Anoka County and has just over 23,000 residents. Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, this region is full of parks and lakes and is a location for ample outdoor recreation. Half of the city's boundaries are to the Mississippi and Rum Rivers. One of the draws to this area for both residents and visitors is its well-maintained parks, with trail use being one of the most popular activities.
Trails
The Anoka County Regional Parks System abounds with miles of paved, unpaved and natural surfaces that make up their trails. The Mississippi River Regional Trail blends both regional and local parks, bringing them together for both hiking and biking. From the Coon Rapids Regional Dam Park, the trail connects several suburbs together and provides a recreational experience that users of the park will appreciate.
Cross Country Skiing
Winter months in Minnesota are good for outdoor recreation like cross-country skiing. The parks system has a number of trails for cross-country skiing. As of 2010, a daily ski pass for $5 per day is required for those wanting to ski. The Bunker Hills Regional Park, the Chomonix Golf course and the Coon Rapids Regional Dam Park all have between 8 to 10 km--or about 4 to 6 miles--of trail for skiing.
Canoeing and Kayaking
During milder months, the park system offers waterways that are ideal for water recreation. The various parks offer lake, river and creek waters for kayaking and canoeing, activities that can help build muscle and burn calories. Park-goers can rent canoes and kayaks at the Wargo Nature Center for use on the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes, and many of the lakes in the park system have canoe and kayak launches for those who own their own boats, including the Coon Rapids Regional Dam Park, Riverfront Regional Park, Rum River Central Regional Park and Lake George Regional Park.
Horseback Riding
One way to enjoy the regional parks system is by horseback, an activity that can be good for both physical and mental health. Two of the system's parks, Bunker Hills and Rum River Regional Park, have trails that are specifically designed for horseback riding. The parks department recommends that you dress appropriately for riding with long pants, hard-soled shoes and any other additional weather-appropriate clothing.
Camping
Time spent in the outdoors is a good way to renew the spirit, mind and body. The Anoka County Regional Parks System offers camping at two of its parks. The Bunker Hills Regional Park and the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park both have campgrounds with simple to moderate facilities. Some campsites are equipped with water and electric outlets for RVs. In addition, both locations have restrooms and showers. Camping is available early May through late October, weather permitting.
