According to All 4 Natural Health, aloe vera has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. The ancient Egyptians, who called aloe vera the “plant of immortality,” prized it for healing wounds and for its benefits on the digestive system. Today the plant is still recognized for its abilities and is often recommended by herbal practitioners to treat joint pain.

According to Natural Joint Care, aloe vera contains a number of beneficial substances including large amounts of vitamins C and E, B1, B2, B3 and B6. It is also rich in manganese, zinc, calcium and iron. Aloe vera can be applied topically on painful areas as a gel form, though Natural Joint Care recommends drinking it in liquid form to obtain the maximum benefits.

This is because it has anti-inflammatory properties and can speed the growth of new cells. This means as well and reducing joint pain, it can also help repair damaged tissue caused by diseases such as arthritis.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, oral aloe vera may cause any of the following side effects: abdominal pain, diarrhea and low blood sugar. Because of the risk of diarrhea, aloe vera may also prevent the proper absorption of other medications. You should not take aloe vera if you suffer from diabetes.
