Bronchitis is a condition characterized by deep coughing and soreness of the chest and throat, according to Dr. James Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of "Prescription for Natural Cures." It typically occurs during an influenza infection, and lingers after your body has destroyed influenza virus cells. Environmental toxins and cigarette smoke can lead to chronic bronchitis. A combination of rest and the use of expectorants is usually the most effective treatment. However, oregano oil may help speed your recovery from this condition. Check with your doctor if you plan to treat bronchitis with oregano oil. You should not use essential oils as replacements for traditional medical treatment for bronchitis.

Tea Light Method

Step 1

Place ½ oz. oregano essential oil in a small glass bowl and suspend it 2 to 3 inches over a tea light, which is a small candle designed for warming potpourri and essential oils.

Step 2

Set the bowl and tea light in a safe place where children and pets cannot reach it, such as a countertop or tall table.

Light the wick of the tea light with a lighter or match. Allow the oil to warm, which will cause it to evaporate into the air. The evaporated oregano oil may penetrate your respiratory tract, promoting the removal of phlegm from your lungs and providing relief from the symptoms of bronchitis.

Steam Method

Step 1

Mix ½ oz. oregano oil with 4 oz. boiling water in a bowl.

Step 2

Position your head so that it is 3 to 4 inches from the bowl.

Step 3

Place a towel over the back of your head, and allow it to drape over the sides of the bowl. This will help prevent the steam from escaping.
