If your body's pH is on the acidic side, you may develop acidosis, which can make you prone to developing various diseases and health conditions, says Washington University. Keeping your body's pH slightly alkaline by eating a diet that supports an alkaline-forming environment may help relieve illnesses and make you more resistant to disease, notes Felicia Drury Kliment in "The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet."

Baking Soda

Baking soda will neutralize acidity in the stomach and will contribute to a change in the body's overall pH, notes Drugs.com. It is one of the fastest ways to alter pH and using baking soda may help relieve acid reflux. To use baking soda, mix 1/2 tsp. in a 6 to 8 oz. glass of water and drink at once. Drink a glass or two daily; however, do not consume more than a maximum of 3 tsp. baking soda in one day. Baking soda can raise the blood pressure, so if you take medicines for hypertension, speak to your health practitioner before using it in this manner.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Foods high in potassium are known to help create an alkaline-forming environment in the blood and urine, according to Dr. Theodore Baroody in "Alkalize or Die." Apple cider vinegar is a weak acid that is very high in potassium and may alter the body's pH when consumed regularly. It is not only helpful for reducing acid reflux, apple cider vinegar can be used as an overall tonic to help prevent disease by reducing acidosis. The easiest way to consume it is by sprinkling it on salads and foods. You can also use it in place of other vinegars in recipes and it can be used as a pickling agent. In addition, you can mix 2 to 4 tbsp. apple cider vinegar in a 6 to 8 oz. glass of water and drink it. If the vinegar is too strong, add more water or reduce the amount of vinegar to a level that you can tolerate. As you get used to it, raise the amount of vinegar to the recommended amount. Drink at least one glass daily.

Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar Combination

Another way to consume baking soda and apple cider vinegar is to mix them together with water to make a drink, says Baroody. By mixing them in the correct proportions, their combined acidic and alkaline properties create a drink with a near-perfect pH of seven, which slightly alters the body's pH. Pour 2 tbsp. organic apple cider vinegar into a tall glass. Use organic vinegar to avoid impurities and pesticide residue that may affect the pH. Add to the vinegar, 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Allow the mixture to foam until there is no fizz remaining. Add 8 oz. water or more and drink the entire mixture all at once. It will taste like flat water and is not unpleasant. Although there is no scientific research concerning the effects of this mixture, anecdotal evidence indicates it may create an almost immediate change in the body's pH.
