Hydroxyzine HCL (hydrochloride) otherwise known as Vistaril, is a multipurpose medication used to alleviate anxiety, emotional stress (especially before medical procedures) and various allergic conditions like asthma, hives and severe itching. This medication works as an antihistamine in patients with allergic reactions. Hydroxyzine HCL should not be taken in combination with alcohol, narcotics or barbiturates. If you are pregnant or have had prior allergic reactions to hydroxyzine hydrochloride, use is not recommended. Consult a physician prior to taking hydroxyzine hydrochloride, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding. Hydroxyzine HCL 25mg, three to four times daily, is the standard dose given to adults suffering from itching due to allergic reactions.

Emergency Side Effects

Immediate medical attention should be sought if the following signs of an allergic reaction to hydroxyzine hydrochloride occur: hives; swelling of the tongue, face, lips or throat; and difficulty breathing. When in doubt call 911.

Serious Side Effects

Hydroxyzine hydrochloride can cause restless muscle movements in the eyes, tongue, jaw or neck. Involuntary motor impairment has also been reported in rare instances. Tremors or convulsions can also occur. The medication should be discontinued and your physician contacted if such effects occur.

Less Serious Side Effects

Some additional, less serious side effects may include dizziness or drowsiness, headache, blurred vision or dry mouth. Side effects can be reported to Food and Drug Administration by calling (800) FDA-1088.
