Bronchitis is an infection of the bronchi, or main lung airways, that leads to inflammation. The National Health Service of the United Kingdom states that anybody may develop this health problem, although the likelihood is greater in certain individuals, such as smokers or people who perform jobs in which they are exposed to lung irritants. Herbal remedies such as boswellia may be useful in treating your bronchitis, although it is always wise to discuss the use of herbs with your family physician first.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis can be either acute or chronic. Acute, or short-lived, bronchitis is commonly caused by viruses that invade your respiratory tract and target your bronchial tubes, notes KidsHealth.org, whereas chronic, or long-term, bronchitis is often caused by smoking. If you develop chronic bronchitis, you may have a greater chance of developing bacterial infections such as pneumonia in your lungs and airways. Cough, sore throat, blocked nasal passages, wheezing and excessive mucus production are among the most common signs and symptoms of bronchitis.
Boswellia
Boswellia is a tree indigenous to dry regions of India, ranging in size from moderate to large. This tree contains an aromatic resin, or a gummy substance, that when purified has traditionally been used in treating numerous ailments. The gum resin of the boswellia tree contains significant amounts of active constituents that include carvone, farnesol, limonene, borneol and boswellic acids. Boswellia has been used for centuries by practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional healing system of India.
Boswellia Actions and Uses
Boswellia possesses numerous health actions, including anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actions. According to Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," boswellia has historically been used in treating various pulmonary conditions. This herb's anti-inflammatory action may be particularly helpful in mitigating symptoms associated with bronchial asthma and bronchitis. More scientific research evidence is necessary to determine the true efficacy of this herb in treating these health problems.
Disclaimer
Both acute and chronic bronchitis should be treated by your primary care provider. If left untreated, bronchitis may lead to serious health complications, including pulmonary hypertension, emphysema and right-sided heart failure, or cor pulmonale. Do not use herbs in lieu of other, more conventional treatment measures recommended by your doctor. Certain herbal remedies may cause unwanted health effects or negatively interact with your prescription drugs. Always ask your doctor if herbs are right for you and your ailment.
