Acupressure Spots for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Acupressure Spots for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Acupressure may relieve sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerves run down the back of the legs from a root near the tail of the spine. When one of the nerves is compressed or damaged, the pain radiates throughout the back and legs, sometimes causing tingling or numbness. By applying acupressure to certain points, you may decrease some of the radiation of symptoms or relieve pain altogether.


According to Acupressure.com, acupressure works because the pressure applied to certain points along meridians in the body allows the body to balance and heal itself. Meridians are pathways recognized by traditional Chinese medicine that carry energy throughout the body. Each is named for an organ and the points along it relate to the functions of that organ in ways that may not seem familiar in Western medicine. To stimulate an acupressure point, use the tip or second knuckle of your index finger and press on the point for at least 30 seconds.


Many of the associated points of the bladder meridian run down the sides of the spine before passing down the center and outer edges of the calf muscles. Try Bladder 40 at the center backs of the knees. If you have varicose veins, skip this and try Bladder 60, in the depression behind the outer ankle bone, and Bladder 65, on the outside of the foot to the rear of the little toe's knuckle. Bladder 21, on the back, aligned with the elbows, helps with pain that starts high. Use your thumbs to stimulate both sides at once.

Spleen and Stomach

There are two points, one on the spleen meridian and one on the stomach meridian, that when stimulated together, can help relieve sciatic nerve pain. Spleen 6 is approximately one palm width above the inner ankle bone on the back of the shin. Stomach 36 is approximately one palm width below the outside bottom edge of the knee cap in the depression between the shin and the leg muscle. Work the spleen point and the stomach point on one side of the body first, before switching to the other side.


Traditional Chinese medicine recognizes a few extraordinary vessel patterns that don't follow the charted pathways of the organ's meridians. One of these can help relieve sciatic nerve pain. It's located just below or within the eyebrow. Feel about halfway out the eyebrow for a ridge. The spot is just above this ridge.
