Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) is an over-the-counter osmotic laxative that works by drawing water into your colon to relieve constipation. A daily dose of a heaping tablespoon of Miralax in a glass of water over a period of 24 to 72 hours should produce a bowel movement unless there is a more serious problem. Since it is available without prescription, there are relatively few side effects from using this product.

Danger of Dependence

Possible dependency may top the list as the worst and most common side effect of using Miralax. The Drugs.com website lists continued dependency on Miralax for regular bowel movements as the "most important fact" regarding its use. The website warns that using too much of the laxative or for more than two weeks may alter the chemical balance of your body. This could lead to using the laxative instead of a proper diet of fresh fruits and vegetables for roughage to maintain regularity.

Abdominal Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting and stomach pains are all common possible side effects from using Miralax. The website RxList also includes symptoms such as bloating, cramping and flatulence as well. It also cites diarrhea and needing to evacuate stools at a high frequency as side effects of taking too much Miralax. This is especially problematic with weakened populations such as geriatric patients in nursing homes, who can get dehydrated easily.

Allergic Reactions

Possibly dangerous allergic reactions can occur with those who may be hyper-sensitive to ethylene glycol. If taking Miralax leads to facial swelling, trouble breathing, tightness in your chest or breaking out in hives or a rash, you should seek immediate medical attention. The Drugs.com website advises stopping the use of this product and contacting your doctor if you have any of these side effects or if you experience rectal bleeding.
