Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid made from the bark of a willow tree. As a skin treatment, it works to exfoliate the dead skin cells and keep the pores clear. When taken orally, salicylic acid works to reduce inflammation and fever. Salicylic acid has other common uses as well.

Pain reliever

Salicylates work in the body to reduce fever and inflammation. These are also used to treat and prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Intestinal Ailments

Bismuth subsalicylate, found in products such as Pepto-Bismol, is used to treat upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea and other intestinal ailments. Although the effects of this substance are still debatable, it is thought to reduce inflammation in the intestinal tract and in the stomach and inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses that can cause intestinal diseases.

Psoriasis

Salicylic acid is used in over-the-counter topical creams for the treatment of mild psoriasis. It softens and helps to remove psoriasis scales.

Warts

Warts can be treated with salicylic acid acid as well. Adhesive pads that are treated with salicylic acid are applied to warts; liquid concentrated salicylic acid can also be applied to warts. It works to soften the rough skin and dissolve the wart.

Acne Treatment

Salicylic acid slows the shedding of dead skin cells in the pores to prevent acne from forming. It also helps clear blackheads and whiteheads.
