I was riding with a friend that got the "door prize" last week and is scheduled for the same surgery as you this Monday for TWO shattered collarbones! We both hit and I'm the lucky one- nothing broke, just sore. I'm wishing you both a speedy recovery and will stay posted to monitor your progress against his.

I have a plate from an old ankle fracture that looks just like yours. Runs up the outside of my leg. I wanted it out because the screw heads bothered me. Orthopod told me that if it was removed it would make the area more vulnerable to more fractures. I believe him. I have severe arthritis all over. After 15 years, the only joint I have that doesn't hurt is that one! Good luck in your recovery. Take the time you need to heal!

Greetings Lance,

This month marks the 13th anniversary of my surg and radio treatment (Feb/March of 96).

That was when I first read the name Lance Armstrong as a result of my internet research into my testicular cancer. And how I learned how relatively lucky I was in my treatment compared to what you were dealing with.

By coincidence, my clavicle was (and still is) the only bone I've ever broken in my body. I was twelve and our neighbors had a very steep driveway we would all blast down on our banana seat bikes, then one afternoon I wiped out at the bottom and I split the bone clean in half.

I remember it didn't hurt much, but I had to wear a harness to keep my shoulders back and straight and had to sleep only on my back, ugh.

Rooting from way out here,

Dan

When I cam home from the hospital after 8 hours of cancer surgery, my husband had a new t-shirt waiting for me. It was a scene of the black knight from Monty Python's Holy Grail with a caption that read "Minor Flesh Wound". I laughed and it hurt! I was back on my bike in 3 weeks and I wish the same for you. Dear Lance
I have the exact same injury 15 years ago.I went endo in the woods one day, by myself, when someone placed a huge mound (5') of dirt at the bottom of a blind hill.Needless to say I went over and landed on my right clavicle.Unfortunately it did not grow back together very well. But I lived through it as will you.Keep that funky brace thing on and it will grow back straight.Hang tough. You are an inspiration to us all.

Hi Lance,
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I am 4 months post-op from my ORIF to the clavicle, and I am impressed you traveled back to the USA before having surgery. As painful as my trip to the ER was, I can only imagine your pain. Chin up, and the pain does begin to ease up after the first couple weeks, but the first few days are brutal.

I liked the question posed to the doctors about the injury having any psychological affects that you will have to over come. I nearly fell out of my chair. Beat Cancer, have miracle babies, inspire millions, become most respected/feared cyclist of our time, humbly defend self from relentless unfair/unfounded accusations that would detract from the significance of all these things and then, after all of this, some how need psychological help for a bumb shoulder? Give me a break. No pun intended. I'd bet on yellow with two bumb shoulders and a square chain ring. You are an oak sir. Give em' hell.

Hey Lance. you should speak to O'Grady or Evans about how they kept going through their numerous broken collar bones. between the 2 of them, they have broken them about 10 times! most important to get your head space right, and keep the motivation going. try little goals broken down into manageable time frames.even little improvements help keep the motivation where it needs to be.

Based on detailed and extensive data regarding both actual and simulated collar bone fractures that are within an acceptable range of identity to yours, you should be able to support your weight safely within 2-3 weeks, while scheduling indoor exercise prescriptions and therapy prior to that time, back to your "old" self within 4-6 weeks and in form to win the Tour de France by some time around July 1st. This prediction is accurate to within plus or minus 1 percentage point. The prediction of a Tour de France is, well, right on!

I crashed at 75 and broke my pelvis in two places. I was back on the bike in two months and riding with Levi Leipheimer in a charity ride. He mentioned that he had a similar injury mimself. I asked how long he was off the bike and he said two weeks. Bummer.

Lance, you'll do well as you've recovered from worse. I had my first surgery last year at 54 y/o. I thought about the example you set as I got out of bed and was in the gym, slowly, on day 3. I did my first triathlon, again slowly, exactly 4 weeks after the surgery and continued to increase after that. There was no way I could sit still and complain after all you've done in the past.

We're all behind you. You're an inspiration for everyone who has ever been down.

We are sending our prayers for a speedy recovery as well. You have been an inspiration. My husband broke (simple fracture) his collar bone the day after he retired from the military. Training for his second Ironman. We had 2 kids playing soccer tourneys that day, 8 people staying at our house and about 100 coming over in the afternoon for a party. He handled it like a trooper. He has a strong personality anyway, but I know that reading your story and watching you fight helped him press on. He was on the trainer the next day with his arm in a sling and a very stylish Hawaiian shirt (couldn't get a t shirt on due to the pain) You know the religious WWJD stuff, his motto in circumstances like that is WWLD? Thank you for your inspiration and get well soon!!

Almost one year to the day like yours. It was March 30th, 2008, stage 2, while at the front another rider crossed my wheel while at 29 mph. I went straight up and straight back down. I had broken my collar bone, my scapula bone (shoulder), three ribs, and 1 or 2 deflated my lung. All on the side I hit the ground with, my left side. I was in the hospital for 6 days and two weeks later I had surgery to place a titanium plate to connect my collar bone back together with 8 screws to be attached. Just like yours they did not how bad it was by x rays but when they cut me open they knew then. My spleen was to be OK. Worse fall I have had in twenty years of serious cycling. My advice: Be careful how much pain pills you take if you are to get back on the trainer soon. The right side will be very hard to sleep on for quite some time. Stay positive, do what you know and be focused. Greg

After 3 back surgeries at the age of 27 (spinal fusion and revision included), I learned the hard way what hurrying your recovery does to your body (hence the need for 3). You are a huge inspiration, on or off the bike, but it has been some long, hard Julys without you. Sending prayers your way, and selfishly, hope to see you in this year's Tour.

I pray for your speedy recovery and know you will be back soon. I will be watching for upcoming posts from you. BE STRONG!!!

Hi, I watch your video and you seem very tired. I broke my shoulder in 2005 (cycling down in the Col du Soulor). The more difficult is to find a good position for sleeping well. I hope you will manage it. For the rest, I'm not wondering a lot. You will recover as quick as possible and you will come back stronger and safer than before. See you in May for training in French Pyr?es. Laurent from Pau - France

Lance,

Just wanted to wish you a fast and full recovery and say thanks for signing my sons autograph. It was the second day of the Tour of California, you had just finished a interview with Bob Roll when you noticed this 10 year old kid at the front of the crowd. When you came over my son handed you a very wet piece of paper and a wet pen. I didn't think there was any chance you would be able to sign your name and after the third try you must have felt liked you were being punk'd and Ashton Kutcher was going to jump out any second. You kept at it and finally managed to get the pen to work. It meant a lot to both of us thanks again

Hey Lance! I hit the deck hard yesterday at Jeff's Cup in Virginia...broke open an old collar bone/scapula injury and think I broke it. On my way to get x-rays in DC now. Anyways, it makes me feel better that I won't be on the trainer alone in the next few weeks. I've broken my collar bone 4 times now...my advice to you is to pass on the Giro and focus on the tour. Be well, Brother. PS: I met you at the LA auto show in 1999 after you came out of Cancer. I was riding up Mt. Wilson the other week in CA when I saw you and a few others come down the mountain. Cool. Hi Lance! I hit the deck pretty hard at Jeff's Cup in Virginia yesterday. Broke open a 6-month collar bone/scapula injury and am off to the MD for x-rays now...This was the 4th time I've broken the collar bone...My advice to you is to let your body heal and not to the Giro. Focus on the Tour and you'll be ok. In-door trainer will let you maintain well. I'll be thinking of you as I do my own trainer work-outs in the garage over the next month...PS: we met briefly at the LA Auto show in 1999. I also greeted you as I rode up Mt. Wilson from Pasadena the weekend after the Tour of CA a few weeks ago (we flew by each other). I'm a friend of Dag-Otto Lauritzen from Norway - where I was born. Be well, Brother. Dear Lance,
My best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to racing soon! You are an inspiration to everyone, so strong and dedicated to working through life issues to continue winning and competing. I have discovered livestrong.com and use it daily to encourage my training and food control. I am 60 years old and always was a good athlete, in fact taught racquetball and played daily even in national tournaments. But life circumstances, depression and arthritis have gotten me down in the last few years. I gained weight and sort of gave up on myself. But through your website I have found some strength to stay with managing my eating, tracking food, water and exercise and now am getting fit again. I may never be what I once was for strength and endurance but I just want to be healthy enough to enjoy more years with my sons and granddaughter. Since starting this program I haven't had any tachycardia episodes which I was having almost daily due to stress. I feel much happier because I am doing something good for myself for a change and watching the results as I track it all on livestrong.com.
I have even signed up for a 5K run in June! I may not run the whole thing but I intend to run most of it. Anyway, thanks for livestrong.com and you keep going!

You know.... if the cycling powers that be allowed recumbent bikes... you wouldn't fall so far and your shoulder wouldn't be a problem.. :) I guess you've done 'OK' on a wedgie thus far. :) Wouldn't it be cool to cruise up to the starting line on an Easy Rider, though? They'd have... well... anyway... Please take care, we're all wishing you the best.

Lance your bigger than this fall...what I'm wondering is, if it's not going to be the tour then what is it? your gifts of inspiration are millions! Everything is for a reason and I have faith that your unwavering strength will turn this into something amazing.

Lance,

You are an inspiration to all cycling fans. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you race very soon. I hoped to be a pro cyclist but I don't have the talent you do. Please continue to do something I can only dream about. I still ride 30 miles a day.

I'm pleased to see the many comments from Adelaide on you being in the Tour Down Under. I am a Yank living in AUS and enjoyed you being there. Hopefully you saw the Harley with the American flag around it when you went by. I would offer encouragement on your recovery but I don't think anyone can advise you about how to recover from anything. I have a brother in law and close friend losing the battle to cancer and have encouraged both to read your first book. You may be the best cylist ever but more then that you are an inspiration to people especially those with cancer. Can't wait for the Tour. Don't care if you win, love to see you compete.

Dopers_Suck, why hide behind a screen name? Who are you, certainly not a world class athlete I suspect. Some whiner, French perhaps?

I do not know why you go through this crap Lance, it will take a decade if someone starts now to equal your success on what for me becomes a smaller less important ride each year.

Frankly, I like the Giro d'Italia over the Tour de France for more reasons than just the more lovely country side and less French involvement.

But one more time, what is your name Dopers_Suck? I am Richard Perry, a California cyclist and cancer survivor who does not hide behind a screen name.

HI LANCE

I just read your book...2000 "It's Not About the Bike" ...so vivid, real...with best anaologies between what you went through with the unknown of being sick and biking. And you were so funny in some parts...

I am sorry about the clavicular break/fracture...hang in there. I am athlete and injury prevention trainer in NYC. My brother is a road bike addict. In 2006 I went to go visit him in DC during the Tour de France and I was forced to watch 6 days straight every morning of the race with coffee and the wall street journal. I was at "bike school" really...I learned all about the politics of racing. I jsut read your book two days ago---a gift from a triathlete friend of mine... I zipped through it one day. It was written by an athlete--no bs, raw emotion, sarcasm, and in your face...loved it!!!!!

and I loved your analysis about how team players help the leader and bad/good moves in a race and how to conserve energy. I am not a biker although my brother is buying me one soon...we are looking for the right fit because I am a tiny woman. Anyway---in 2007 ...I suffered a stress fracure on my pubic bone. I was 29. EWhat should ahve been a 3 -6 month recovery turned into a nightmare ---my bone and soft tissue --inquinal ligament and all the tissue at pubic bone site on pelvis--developed a sensitivity that led to RSD Reflexive Sympathetic Dystrophy....my life flipped...I had a team of doctors too. There is no cure and similar to cancer--nerve damage spirals out of control...its a trauma disorder. I was raped with post tramautic stress of being hurt and never sprinting or swimming again. I was faced with te unknown---and when medicine is the unknown--all you have left is yourself--its a lonley, courageous ride...and just as yor friend said to you at your treatment center---"we are the lucky ones" ...I said that to my friend in MD who has this disorder also, in her leg after a car accident. I would say--we are so lucky because we have nothing left to fear--we are at the bottom all we can go is up--and we are experiencing the unknown and what if I never... and everyone fears that--but we got to own it and embrace it ---and become one wit it and live with it---that is a CHAMPIONSHIP----

I said we are angels now---we walk on air----

I recovered 150 percent----from a vegetable state---I lost 30 lbs, bed ridden for months and somatic medicine to put me in a zombie to help my brain reboot. I am a mirale. It was not expected that I would ever be back to normal. The very painful part of the syndrome lasted 11 months...now it has been a year and 4 months...and I am no longer in pain. I walked in water and to relearnt o float--LOL--I was like baby---lol ----I was so fragile but so strong at the same time.

I used reiki, meditation and mind games---similar to what you alked about in your book --to tackle fear and losing your life, body and identity as an athlete--athletes go through two parts--loss of regular life and loss of athlete life....BUT then you realize---life is life----without the sport--and that is what I had to learn---I am calm now and I live so differently now that RSD is leaving my body. I still ahve 10 perecent of a phantom senssation and muscle spams -leg jumping but my nerves are normal now and they recover within a few hrs, pian goes away...my leg gets cold but my symptons are so manageale now...When I jog or do plyometrci jumps or agility-----its like heaven

Gaining a new identity as a survivor of the unknown is another sense of heaven. The fear of never being able to be physical again in my lower body changed to--just being able to walk --walking and just getting into the shower--not ebing afraid to seprarte my legs ---was my work out.

In the summer of 2008---I could barely move but I fought tooth and nail --and out on my shorts, just a sports bra and walked all around my block--with music I usually run to---and just innately knew--I am going to beat this thing in me...It was like a space invasion in my body.

I read your book and I idenified with so much of what you went through--my stubbornness, my warrior-like personality, my persistence, my anger, my hopefulness and my spirit ----all came alive in one when I read about your experience.

I am now working on a non-profit for RSD with y friend. I am bac to working part time with my clients and I will be training at ST John's Uiversity witth my own trainer for many years to come. I jog now and I am doing agilities---and my left left and hip are ALIVE and KICKING!!!! rebuilding my pelvis strength and getting stability back in my body ----made me stronger physically then I ever was--even if I cannot perform as in my past---I do what I can--and my hips are solid and my body is a sacred blessing

You are an inspiration to me...and the first person --in your writing I connect to with illness ad being an athlete.

I look up to you and I know that drive, adrenalin rush, like a possession that take sover in competition--when you are streamlining so easy--it doesn't even feel like you are working that hard and then other days wehre you are so connected to that working pain in the muscle with blodd pumping all over the body.....

we were meant to get these illnesses because we were strong to beat them and provide a sense of hope and healing to others around us...

I got RSD because I was meant to overcome it and teach about it and heal others. I now practice reiki and help others get pain relief with heat energy. I am in the process of writing about athlete injuries and the emotional states that happen through injury and recovery...

REST THAT SHOULDER and recover it before you jump on that bike...your body and spirit are not going anywhere:))) Be patient and just enjoy the recovery and building the joint back up....take a walk outside and feel the sun rays--

bike in your brain and keep writing --until you get back on the bike

your spirit is so refreshing in your clip above...this is a small step to another door that you will open and your a champion ---
you never know what the next 20 years can hold in your athletics.....

NEVER STOP DREAMING.... I had an eastern doc who said he didn't believe in dreams----I lost faith in him that day---because my dreams is where I healed---in my worst days my dreams kept me going---I ran in my dreams pain free---feeling my feet hit the track and bouncing off---was ectasy---my dreams are where I was cured...and now I am living my dream...

GOODLUCK!!!
you are larger than life---I don't know you--LOL
but enjoy your recovery and just breathe:)))))))
you are not alone
